Week Ending: 8th of February 2018

Weekly Learning Review

Class:   FS2                          Week Ending: 8.2.18
Communication and Language and Literacy
This week, we learned the ‘et’ digraph. We played word games using words such as vet, jet, let, wet, net and recognised the rhyming strings. We also consolidated our learning of the key words such as ‘big’, ‘like’, ‘it’, ‘was’, ‘play’. Please look out for these words as you read stories to your children. The children also ‘Had a Go’ at writing for meaning; answering specific questions surrounding the class text ‘Hansel and Gretel’. They also used drama and role play to re-enact scenes from the story.
Physical Development
The children have focussed on cutting using scissors accurately by holding the scissors securely and cutting straight on; ensuring that they turn the paper when cutting around edges. Importantly, they learned how to hold the scissors safely when walking around- closing the scissors tight and holding ‘the cutting part’ in a closed fist. Please practise putting jackets and coats on and taking them off independently
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
Through the story of Hansel and Gretel, we learned about ‘Stranger Danger’. We learned lessons from the story and sang a song. Please sing the song at home with your child.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=92HCKfYakLU
We also learned how to treat others with respect and highlighted the ‘No Touching’ rule.

Mathematics
We focused on number bonds to 10 and to 20- numbers added together to total 10 and 20. We used objects to secure understanding and some children are developing a more abstract understanding of number. This was highlighted when adding two sets of numbers. For example, when adding 6 +5, some children counted from zero to six then counted five more. Others started their solving from six and then counted on.

Expressive Art and Design
This week, we used paint and collage to create ‘Carnival Masks’ in time for the Carnival Parade. The theme this year was  African animals. We have also been singing songs and recreating scenes from the the class story ‘Hansel and Gretel’ by using mixed media.
Understanding of the World

We learned about the Seven Continents in order of size - Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe and Australasia.
Below, is a link to the song that we have been singing in class.
